Make no mistake about it – as the Flyers inducted goalie Ron Hextall into the club’s Hall of Fame last night, a chapter was being closed in the history of this storied franchise. The story began back in 1986 when a tall, skinny kid from Brandon, Manitoba was given the starting goaltender’s job for the Philadelphia Flyers. This particular Flyers hockey team was still emotionally raw from the loss of Pelle Lindbergh less than 2 years earlier. To expect that all the pain and hurt would be cast aside by this rookie would have been foolish. To even imagine that the Flyers would ride the shoulders of this combative, energetic rookie all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals would have earned you a spot in a mental hospital. But as we all know – all these things did happen and a little less than 22 years later, the final words of a great chapter were penned by none other than Hextall himself during his induction on Wednesday: ” … To the fans of Philadelphia: …. We Were Tailor-Made for Each other.”
