To all of those wretchedly out of touch sports fans inside and outside the city of Philadelphia, hear this: The Arena Football Championship that Jon Bon Jovi and the Philadelphia Soul won last weekend DOES NOT END OUR 25 year, 100 major professional sports championship season drought.  1983 was the last time that one of the MAJOR 4 teams won a title.  Nonetheless, the city did manage to say thank you to the Soul today with a really nice rally at City Hall to commemorate their victory over the San Jose Sabre Cats.  Approximately 5000 fans showed up for the festivities.  Here are some pics for all to enjoy (Click them for a larger view):

Hextall-close-upwithmaskonMake no mistake about it – as the Flyers inducted goalie Ron Hextall into the club’s Hall of Fame last night, a chapter was being closed in the history of this storied franchise. The story began back in 1986 when a tall, skinny kid from Brandon, Manitoba was given the starting goaltender’s job for the Philadelphia Flyers. This particular Flyers hockey team was still emotionally raw from the loss of Pelle Lindbergh less than 2 years earlier. To expect that all the pain and hurt would be cast aside by this rookie would have been foolish. To even imagine that the Flyers would ride the shoulders of this combative, energetic rookie all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals would have earned you a spot in a mental hospital. But as we all know – all these things did happen and a little less than 22 years later, the final words of a great chapter were penned by none other than Hextall himself during his induction on Wednesday: ” … To the fans of Philadelphia: …. We Were Tailor-Made for Each other.”

For the sake of this post, I’m going to assume that no one (other than Andy Reid) believes that Eagles have [INSERT POST TITLE HERE] of making the playoffs. After their most recent game, the Eagles are now 5-8 and are in complete shambles. Despite managing to disguise themselves as a 9-4 playoff team, the New York Giants are by no means a good team. The fact that the Eagles could not defeat them @ Lincoln Financial field is a painful reminder of how bad this Eagles team really is. For whatever the reasons, it is now clear that the Eagles’ window of opportunity from earlier this decade has completely closed. What we are left holding is a painful reminder of what this Eagles team never accomplished.

First, let me start by making the following disclaimers:

  1. The Eagles are not a very good football team
  2. The Eagles are not a playoff team as of the moment
  3. I doubt that the Eagles even COULD make the playoffs
  4. Donovan McNabb is having his most inconsistent season as an Eagle
  5. The Eagles have had terrible special teams play all season

We were forced to endure a frustrating painful pathetic exciting game against the Washington Redskins yesterday. The very overrated 5-3 Washington Redskins squared off against a very under achieving Eagles team in a game that will never be included in the archives of the NFL’s greatest games. As a result, it was nothing that transpired on the field of play that got my ire going, instead it was the CLUELESS hosts and the odd caller into the 610-WIP post-game show.

As Eric Lindros announces his retirement today in London, Ontario – I find myself reflecting on what was an intensely exhilarating, frustrating and controversial 8 years as a Philadelphia Flyer. From the moment that Larry Bertuzzi awarded the “Next One” to the Flyers in a bizarre arbitration case, the hopes of an entire city starved for another Stanley Cup were placed on the broad shoulders of the man-child from Canada. Short of winning a Stanley Cup (which of course he never did), there was almost no chance that he was going to fulfill the gargantuan expectations that befell him. What he did give us however was a story almost as epic as many of the great Greek tragedies.

This has been bugging me now for a couple of weeks; Head Coach of the Eagles Andy Reid has been dealing with some really nasty family stuff for the past six to nine months. The troubles surrounding his two sons (Britt & Garrett) have been well documented and chronicled in the Philadelphia media. However, over the last 4-6 weeks the coverage by the local media has taken a completely different direction. All of the written opinion and talk-show discourse had shifted into a gear that I could only characterize as negative and completely inappropriate. While everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion on how well they BELIEVE Andy Reid IS or IS NOT handling his family and home life – is all the constant discussion, deliberation and speculation provide any value to an already horrible situation?

I almost can’t believe that I am saying this; but it has slowly been brewing in my mind for a couple of years now. The NHL needs to OUTLAW all fighting in the game.  There is NO place for it anymore.  This is a holdover from an earlier day; a brutal memento to a completely different game.  This cannot possible be about CODE, DUTY, HONOR or any other nonsense.  Are you still wondering what brought this rant on?  Well take a look at this:

http://scores.espn.go.com/nhl/recap?gameId=271025001

This is by far the most brutal, most ridiculous, and most damning indictment of what the NHL has been unable and unwilling to overcome in recent years.  Although it is true that the players have gotten bigger and faster (while the rinks have stayed more or less stationary in size) – who in their right mind can possibly defend this type of barbarism in professional sports?  The players have to learn that if this game is truly worth playing, then it MUST promote the fundamental respect for each and every professional who straps up a pair of skates.  I love hockey & the NHL, but I would never want my son to play a game where this type of behavior is simpy brushed aside as being “part of the game.”   I don’t know Zdeno Chara personally, but I am sure that I would be embarassed if I had to try to defend this type of behavior.

Hockey is a fast, intense & at times physically punishing sport.  However if we find ourselves making excuses for a practice which is silly (@ best), then all we do is to promote and encourage these deviant traditions to continue.  By the way, here’s a thought: if we (as fans) were to turn our backs away from the fighting and face towards the boards, do you think that the NHL will realize that its silent approval of fighting is nothing more than a hit from behind?
